“I got in!”
I was accepted into my first art fair in the fall of 2021. The Lakeville Art Festival has an emerging artist’s program - which I think is brilliant. They accept a few artists who have never been in an art fair before - the up-and-comers that don't have booth shots, tents, experience etc. They let me borrow a tent, which was awesome, but I was going to have to figure out how to display my paintings. How the heck do I do that? I spent the first half of that summer attending other art fairs, taking notes. But I didn't have time (or the funds) to order tent walls and I hadn't the slightest idea of what I was going to do.
"Yoko! Susan!"
My two best friends flew into town to help me. Time was ticking and I was in a mild panic. We drew up a plan...or did we? Maybe we didn't, I can't remember. But I do know that the day before the art fair, we went to Home Depot and bought a bunch of long pieces of wood and a box of screws.
We built a test "painting hanger" in my backyard. DIY at its finest.
My brilliant friend Susan has literally built a canoe from scratch, so I knew I was in good hands. We pieced something together and it actually worked!
We measured once, not twice, because I am a proud Type Z and I don't care if things are perfect. But it was perfect.
The fair was perfect too. Yoko and Susan surprised me with a bottle of champagne at the end and we cheersed to my first art fair.
Fast forward a few years...
